SAN DIEGO -- A female sailor who had recently returned from deployment on the USS Ronald Reagan was at the wheel of a sport utility vehicle that rear-ended another car, killing one man and injuring another, NBC 7/39 reported.

Investigators said David Gallegos, 33, an examiner with the Department of Motor Vehicles, was killed when a black Buick SUV driven by Janauana Aiken slammed into the back of the Toyota Corolla he was riding in. The crash happened in the 3200 block of Palm Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Gallegos was giving a driving test to a 23-year-old man, NBC 7/39 reported. The DMV office is located a few blocks from where the vehicles collided.

The Corolla rolled after the collision and came to a stop on its side against an electrical box. Dozens of horrified witnesses saw the crash and tried to help afterward, but the victim was trapped in the wreck and bled to death, reported NBC 7/39,

Aiken, who is in her 20s, kept going for about a block after the crash, but then parked the car and walked back to the accident scene, according to police. A witness told NBC 7/39 that Aiken told police she had caused the crash.

Police said no charges have been filed yet against her, but that could change.
