SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police and health experts are asking for an intervention.

A group that is part of the San Diego County Policy Panel on Youth Access to Alcohol asked lawmakers Friday for legislation on alcohol advertising and access to alcoholic beverages.

The group said the alcohol industry targets young people with products known as "alcopops," bottled alcoholic beverages that resemble drinks such as soft drinks and lemonade. It also claims that liquor stores make 20 to 30 percent of their profits from sales to minors and intoxicated customers.


Both are illegal, said Dr. Cleo Malone, founder and director of The Palavra Tree, Inc., a local treatment and prevention center in downtown San Diego.

"They make an awful lot of money on illegal sales," Malone said.

The group said alcohol-related deaths among young people is on the rise in San Diego County, and that DUI arrests of 16 to 25-year-olds have also increased 16 percent.
